In depressed individuals, TMS therapy stimulates underactive parts of the brain with a magnetic pulse, increasing natural neurotransmitter activity
You recline in a comfortable chair, remaining fully awake and alert, and a coil is placed lightly on your head. You experience only a clicking sound and a gentle tapping sensation on your head. This is not electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
A treatment session takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Patients typically have five sessions per week for four to six weeks.
There are no aftereffects to prevent you from resuming normal activities right away, including driving home from your appointment. The most common side effect of TMS is temporary discomfort or pain at the treatment site, and most patients do not continue to experience this after the first week’s treatment sessions.
